Section 01

What DM automation actually is

DM automation sends pre-written messages to people based on triggers. Someone comments a keyword on your post, they get a DM. Someone replies to your story, they get a follow-up. Someone clicks a link, they get the next step.

It's not a chatbot that pretends to be you. It's a system that handles the repetitive parts of conversations so you can focus on the ones that actually need you.

The most common use case: someone comments a keyword on your Reel or post, and they automatically get a DM with a link to your freebie, booking page, or product. That's it. That's where most people should start.

Section 02

The platforms worth knowing

ManyChat: The market leader. Handles Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, and SMS. The free tier covers basic Instagram automation for up to 1,000 contacts. Pro is $15/mo. This is what most creators use and what I recommend starting with.

Chatfuel: Strong on Facebook Messenger and Instagram. Good for e-commerce brands. The AI features are more advanced than ManyChat's for handling varied responses. Starts at $24/mo. No free tier for Instagram.

Instagram native auto-replies: Instagram has built-in FAQ auto-replies and saved replies. No external tool needed. Very basic. Good for answering the same 3 questions you get every day. Not automation, but worth setting up.

My recommendation: Start with ManyChat free. It covers Instagram keyword triggers, basic flows, and email collection. You can connect it to Kit via Make later. Don't overthink platform choice at the start.

Section 03

Trigger types and when to use them

Keyword triggers: Someone comments a specific word on your post or Reel. They get a DM. This is the most common and most effective trigger. Example: 'Comment GUIDE and I'll DM you the link.'

Story mention triggers: Someone mentions you in their story. They get an automatic thank-you DM. Good for building relationships and encouraging shares.

Story reply triggers: Someone replies to your story. They enter a flow. Good for engagement-based lead capture.

Comment triggers: Broader than keywords. Can trigger on any comment, first comment, or comments containing specific phrases.

The one you should set up first: Keyword trigger on a post or Reel that delivers your lead magnet. This single automation can replace hours of manually DMing links.

Section 04

Basic flows to set up first

Flow 1: Lead magnet delivery. Someone comments a keyword. They get a DM with the link. Add a follow-up message 10 minutes later asking if they got it. Simple. Effective. This replaces manually DMing links to every person who asks.

Flow 2: FAQ responses. Set up keyword triggers for your most common questions. 'PRICING' sends your rate card. 'HOURS' sends your availability. 'APPLY' sends your application link. Saves you from copy-pasting the same answer 20 times a day.

Flow 3: Booking link delivery. Someone comments 'BOOK' or 'CALL' and gets your scheduling link via DM. Add one qualifying question first if you want to filter out people who aren't ready.

Keep it simple: Your first automation should take 15 minutes to set up. If it's taking longer, you're overcomplicating it.

Section 05

Connecting DMs to your email list

The goal: someone enters your DM automation, you capture their email, and they get added to your email list automatically. Two separate systems working together.

Inside ManyChat: Add an email collection step to your flow. After delivering the lead magnet, ask 'Want me to send more stuff like this? Drop your email.' ManyChat stores it.

ManyChat to Kit via Make: Build a Make scenario that watches for new ManyChat subscribers with emails. When one appears, add them to Kit with the right tag. This runs automatically. Set it up once.

Direct Kit integration: ManyChat has a native Kit integration on the Pro plan. Simpler than Make but less flexible. If you're just passing emails and tags, it works fine.

Why this matters: DM followers are engaged but temporary. Instagram can change the algorithm tomorrow. Your email list is yours. Every DM automation should have an email capture path.

Section 06

Mistakes to avoid and staying compliant

Don't automate cold outreach. DM automation is for responding to people who engage with you first. Sending unsolicited DMs to people who didn't ask is spam. Instagram will flag you. Your account will get restricted.

Don't make it feel like a bot. Use natural language. Short messages. Ask one question at a time. If your automated DM reads like a corporate FAQ page, rewrite it.

Respect opt-outs. If someone says 'stop' or doesn't respond, don't send more messages. ManyChat handles this automatically if you set it up right.

Disclose when it's automated. You don't need a disclaimer on every message, but don't pretend a bot is you. If someone asks a real question, jump in personally.

Instagram's rules: Instagram limits how many DMs you can send per day (varies, but roughly 50-100 for newer accounts). Don't blast. Let the automation respond to real engagement.

Compliance basics: Follow CAN-SPAM for email collection. Include unsubscribe options. Don't sell or share email addresses collected through DMs. Be a real person running a real business, not a spam operation.

Email Platform Comparison

DM automation works best when it feeds an email list you actually own. Five platforms compared so you can pick the right one.
