The tools worth knowing to create content.
Not all of these are AI tools. Some are. Some are just good tools that do the job. Organized by category, tagged by skill level, with honest notes on what each one actually does well.
What's inside
Category 01
Writing & Copy
These tools help you draft, edit, rewrite, and polish written content. Some are full AI writers. Some are editors. Know the difference before you pay for anything.
Grammarly
beginnerFree tier available. Premium $12/mo. Business $15/mo per seat.
The default writing assistant for most people. Catches grammar, tone, and clarity issues in real time. Works everywhere: browser, desktop, mobile. The free tier is solid. Premium adds tone detection, full-sentence rewrites, and plagiarism checks.
The AI writing features in Premium are decent but generic. Use it for editing, not drafting.
Jasper
intermediateCreator $49/mo. Pro $69/mo. Business custom pricing.
A marketing-focused AI writing tool. Jasper is built for teams that produce a lot of content: ads, social posts, blog articles, email sequences. It has templates for almost every marketing format and can learn your brand voice.
Expensive for solo use. The brand voice feature is genuinely useful if you feed it enough examples. Most solo creators don't need this.
Copy.ai
beginnerFree tier (2,000 words/mo). Pro $49/mo. Enterprise custom.
AI copywriting tool focused on short-form content. Good for social captions, ad copy, product descriptions, and email subject lines. The free tier gives you enough to test whether it fits your workflow.
The workflow automation features are underrated. You can build multi-step content pipelines without code.
Hemingway Editor
beginnerFree web version. Desktop app $19.99 one-time.
Not an AI writer. A readability editor. It highlights complex sentences, passive voice, adverbs, and hard-to-read passages. Forces you to write clearly. Named after Hemingway for a reason.
Use this after you write, not instead of writing. Pair it with any AI writer for better output.
Writesonic
intermediateFree tier available. Pro from $20/mo. Enterprise custom.
AI writing platform that covers blog posts, ads, landing pages, and SEO content. Includes Chatsonic (their ChatGPT alternative) and an AI article writer that can pull real-time data from the web.
The real-time web data feature sets it apart from Jasper for blog content. Quality varies by topic.
Category 02
Image Generation
AI image tools for social graphics, brand assets, thumbnails, and creative visuals. Some are built for designers. Some are built for people who just need something that looks good fast.
Canva Magic Studio
beginnerFree tier available. Canva Pro $13/mo (includes Magic Studio).
Canva's AI features inside the design tool you probably already use. Magic Write generates text, Magic Design creates layouts from prompts, Magic Edit changes elements in photos, and Background Remover does what it says. All inside the Canva editor.
Not the best image generation on its own, but the convenience of having it inside your design tool is hard to beat.
Adobe Firefly
intermediateFree tier (25 credits/mo). Included with Creative Cloud plans. Standalone from $5/mo.
Adobe's AI image generator. Trained on licensed content, so you can use the output commercially without copyright concerns. Integrates directly into Photoshop, Illustrator, and Express. The generative fill feature in Photoshop is genuinely impressive.
The commercial safety angle matters. If you're creating client deliverables or brand assets, this removes the legal gray area other tools have.
Midjourney
advancedBasic $10/mo. Standard $30/mo. Pro $60/mo.
The gold standard for AI art quality. Creates stunning, highly stylized images from text prompts. Runs through Discord (which is a learning curve). The results are consistently the most visually impressive of any image generator.
The Discord interface is the biggest barrier to entry. If you can get past that, the output quality is unmatched. Not great for photo-realistic needs.
DALL-E 3
beginnerIncluded with ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo). API pricing per image.
OpenAI's image generator, built into ChatGPT. The biggest advantage is conversational prompting. You describe what you want in plain language, ChatGPT refines the prompt, and DALL-E generates it. Much easier than learning prompt engineering.
Quality is good but not Midjourney-level for artistic work. Best for illustrations, diagrams, social graphics, and concept art.
Leonardo AI
intermediateFree tier (150 tokens/day). Apprentice $12/mo. Artisan $30/mo. Maestro $60/mo.
AI image generator with strong control features. Offers fine-tuned models for different styles, real-time canvas generation, and motion capabilities. The free tier is one of the most generous in the space.
Great middle ground between DALL-E's simplicity and Midjourney's quality. The real-time canvas feature is worth exploring.
Category 03
Video Editing
Video tools for editing, clipping, captioning, and producing content. Some of these replace a full editing suite. Others just handle the tedious parts so you can focus on the creative work.
CapCut
beginnerFree with watermark. Pro $10/mo or $75/yr.
TikTok's parent company built this, and it shows. CapCut is the go-to free video editor for short-form content. Auto-captions, trending templates, green screen, speed ramping, and effects that would take hours in Premiere. Desktop and mobile.
The free version is shockingly capable. The auto-caption accuracy is some of the best in the market.
Descript
intermediateFree tier available. Hobbyist $24/mo. Business $33/mo.
Edit video and audio by editing text. Descript transcribes your content, then you edit the transcript to edit the media. Delete a sentence from the transcript and the video cuts. It also has screen recording, AI voice cloning, and Studio Sound for audio cleanup.
This is the tool I personally use. The text-based editing approach changes how you think about video production.
Opus Clip
beginnerFree tier (limited clips). Starter $19/mo. Growth $49/mo.
Takes long-form video (YouTube, Zoom recordings, podcasts) and automatically finds the best clips for short-form. AI scores each clip by virality potential. Auto-crops to vertical, adds captions, and reframes the speaker.
The AI clip selection is hit or miss, but the top-scoring clips are usually genuinely good moments.
Runway ML
advancedFree tier (limited). Standard $12/mo. Pro $28/mo. Unlimited $76/mo.
The most advanced AI video tool on the market. Gen-3 creates video from text prompts. Plus: inpainting (remove objects from video), motion tracking, green screen without a green screen, and style transfer. This is where video AI is headed.
Gen-3 is impressive but not ready to replace real video. Best used for B-roll, transitions, and creative effects.
Adobe Premiere Pro
advanced$23/mo (single app). Included in Creative Cloud All Apps $60/mo.
The industry standard for professional video editing now has AI features baked in. Auto-transcription, AI-powered audio cleanup, auto-color matching, scene detection, and text-based editing. If you already know Premiere, the AI features make it faster.
Not for beginners. But if you're already paying for Creative Cloud, the AI additions are worth learning.
Category 04
Content Repurposing
These tools take one piece of content and turn it into many. Record once, distribute everywhere. This is where most creators waste the most time doing manually.
Repurpose.io
beginnerPodcaster $32/mo. Content Marketer $66/mo.
Automated content distribution. Connect your YouTube, TikTok, podcast, or live stream and Repurpose.io automatically reformats and publishes to other platforms. Set up workflows once and forget about them.
This is a distribution tool, not an editing tool. The automation is the value. Best paired with something like Opus Clip for actual repurposing.
Castmagic
intermediateStarter $23/mo. Pro $49/mo. Enterprise custom.
Upload audio or video and Castmagic generates a full content suite: show notes, blog posts, social posts, email newsletters, timestamps, key quotes, and summaries. Built for podcasters and video creators who want to maximize every recording.
The custom prompt templates are the real power feature. Train it on your content style once and it consistently outputs in your voice.
Vizard
beginnerFree tier (limited). Starter $20/mo. Growth $40/mo.
AI-powered video repurposing. Upload a long video and Vizard creates short clips, adds captions, reframes for vertical, and lets you customize before publishing. Similar to Opus Clip but with more editing control.
The editing interface is more flexible than Opus Clip's. Good middle ground between full automation and full manual editing.
Claude Projects
intermediateIncluded with Claude Pro ($20/mo) or Team ($30/mo per seat).
Not a traditional repurposing tool, but incredibly effective for it. Create a Claude Project with your content style guide, upload a transcript or blog post, and ask Claude to generate social posts, email sequences, thread content, or newsletter drafts in your voice.
This is my preferred method for repurposing. Upload transcript plus style guide. Ask for 10 social posts. Edit from there. Faster than any template tool.
Category 05
Workflow & Automation
Tools that connect your other tools, schedule your content, and handle the repetitive parts of running a content operation. The less glamorous but most impactful category.
Notion AI
beginnerFree tier (limited AI). Plus $10/mo. AI add-on $10/mo per member.
Notion's built-in AI. Summarize notes, generate drafts, brainstorm ideas, fill in databases, and translate content. All inside the workspace you're probably already using for project management and note-taking.
The AI is decent but not best-in-class for any single task. The value is convenience and integration, not quality.
Make (formerly Integromat)
intermediateFree tier (1,000 ops/mo). Core $10.59/mo. Pro $18.82/mo. Teams $34.12/mo.
Visual automation platform. Connect any tools, build multi-step workflows, add logic and filters, and automate complex sequences. More powerful and cheaper than Zapier for anything beyond basic automations.
I use Make for everything. The visual builder makes complex logic readable. Learning curve is steeper than Zapier but worth it.
Metricool
beginnerFree tier (1 brand). Starter $22/mo. Advanced $54/mo.
Social media scheduling, analytics, and management in one tool. Covers TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Facebook, Pinterest, and Google Business. The analytics dashboard is cleaner than most competitors.
This is what I use for scheduling. The TikTok and YouTube integration works better than most alternatives.
Airtable
intermediateFree tier (1,000 records). Team $20/seat/mo. Business $45/seat/mo.
Spreadsheet meets database meets project management. Build content calendars, asset libraries, CRM systems, editorial workflows, and more. The automations and interface designer make it a legitimate app-building tool.
Overkill for basic content calendars. Worth it when you're managing a content operation with multiple formats, team members, or clients.
Category 06
Chatbot AIs
The general-purpose AI assistants. Each one has strengths. None of them are good at everything. Here's what each one actually does best so you can pick the right one for the job.
ChatGPT
beginnerFree tier (GPT-4o mini). Plus $20/mo. Team $30/mo per seat.
The one everyone knows. Good at creative writing, brainstorming, coding, and general knowledge tasks. The plugin ecosystem and custom GPTs give it the widest range of capabilities. DALL-E image generation built in on Plus.
Jack of all trades. Good at most things. Best at none specifically. The custom GPTs feature is underused and powerful.
Claude
beginnerFree tier available. Pro $20/mo. Team $30/mo per seat.
Anthropic's AI assistant. Excels at long-form analysis, nuanced writing, working with documents, and following complex instructions precisely. The Projects feature lets you create persistent workspaces with custom context and instructions. But the real power is building custom artifacts. I've built a custom short-form content scripting tool and a carousel generator inside Claude that I use for my own content production.
Strongest at understanding context and following instructions. If you need something written in your voice, Claude with a good system prompt gets closest. And if you're willing to go deeper, you can build entire content workflows as custom tools inside it.
Gemini
beginnerFree tier. Advanced $20/mo (includes 2TB Google storage).
Google's AI. The standout feature is deep Google Workspace integration. It can access your Gmail, Drive, Docs, and Calendar. If your entire life runs on Google, Gemini has context other AIs don't.
The Google integration is the real differentiator. The AI itself is good but not category-leading for creative work.
Perplexity AI
beginnerFree tier. Pro $20/mo.
An AI search engine, not a chatbot. Ask a question and Perplexity searches the web, synthesizes sources, and gives you an answer with citations. Think of it as Google search that actually reads the results for you.
I use this alongside Claude. Claude for writing and analysis, Perplexity for research and fact-checking. They complement each other.
Microsoft Copilot
beginnerFree tier. Copilot Pro $20/mo. Copilot for M365 $30/user/mo.
Microsoft's AI assistant. The free version is a capable chatbot. The real value is Copilot for Microsoft 365, which embeds AI into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. If your company runs on Microsoft, this is built for you.
The M365 integration is the only reason to consider this over the others. The standalone chatbot is not competitive with Claude or ChatGPT for creative work.
